Young Enoch
“Physical Edification” is a process in which the heightening of morals and spirituality manifests physically in the body. According to this concept, spiritual enlightenment overwhelms the physical body and shows through in mystical ways.
The concept of edification is vastly explored through the figures of saints in catholicism. However, the symbolic transformation of their bodies as they are portrayed in art, are due to their self sacrifice.
In this short video, I explore the idea of nature and music in place of religious enlightenment as contributors to edification. The character in this short animation, Enoch, is edified through his time spent alone, in natural settings, and listening to music. However, his complete transformation does happen in a religious setting as a reference to my original inspiration from the saints in catholic art. Naming this character Enoch, a biblical figure who was brought by God into heaven before his death, reflects this path to enlightenment, but like most other saints, this Enoch was not able to leave without leaving something behind.
Young Enoch’s larger narrative, where dialogue, and more moments of self-connection build up to the moment where he is to decide whether or not to transcend, would pose the question: “Is it possible to reach enlightenment without self-sacrifice?”
